What's new in Workplace? December 2018

by Sabrina Morsello

Our monthly round-up of all the latest Workplace product announcements.

Happy New Year! Even though December was a short month with the festive season in full swing, we still managed a few major improvements to Workplace by Facebook.

Although we are just starting off 2019, we've already started launching new features. Stay up to date in real time by joining the Workplace by Facebook product announcements group.

Workplace is now ISO 27018 certified

We're pleased to announce that we're now taking our security credentials even further with our ISO/IEC 27018:2014 security standard certification.

What is ISO 27018?

It's a privacy-focused international standard that builds on information security management systems. It establishes commonly accepted controls and guidelines to protect Personally Identifiable Information (PII) in public cloud computing environments. Certified organisations need to meet these requirements:

  • Providing cloud customers with the ability to access, correct and erase their PII
  • Ensuring data processing for its intended purpose and not out of context
  • Defining procedures for deleting temporary files
  • Implementing defined disclosure procedures
  • Providing open, transparent notice when cloud service providers use sub-contractors
  • Encouraging accountability via breach notification procedures
  • More stringent information security requirements for cloud service providers

What does this mean for you?

We achieved ISO 27001 accreditation in October 2017. This ensures the confidentiality, integrity and availability of information that organisations control and process. ISO 27001 also applies a risk management process so that organisations can manage risk.

With ISO27018, we wanted to further improve how we align our security controls to match with the needs and expectations of customers.

All of which means that you now have more control over your PII and visibility on how we use it. Our ISO27018 certification also gives our customers more assurance about how we process their data according to the very highest industry standards.

By following the standards of ISO/IEC 27001 and the code of practice embodied in ISO/IEC 27018, Workplace demonstrates that our privacy policies and procedures are robust and in line with its high standards.

We're delighted to have achieved this latest milestone. Find out more about our security commitment on our website or view the ISO 27018 certificate here.

Updating & improving Workplace Chat apps

On 17 December, we began rolling out some exciting improvements to the Workplace Chat apps. We will now match the new Messenger navigation launched in October and integrate additional features to help you customise your conversations. These changes are coming for all devices and platforms, and will be available to everyone over the next few weeks.

How does it work?

The new Workplace Chat will maintain the same familiar interface as Messenger, including a simpler layout with tabs focused on Chats and People. It will also be possible to customise the colour of chat threads. You will need to update your Workplace Chat app to see these changes.

Adding and removing people from Workplace just got easier

G-suite & Azure ad integrations

Provisioning through our built-in Azure AD and G-Suite integrations is the quickest and easiest way to get everyone on Workplace. We now provide instant updates and instant deactivation so that Workplace and these IDPs are always in sync. Learn more here or go to the Add People tab in your Admin Panel to get started.

Bulk add & deactivate accounts with CSV

Improved bulk adding and deactivation is not only quicker and more reliable, but allows for support of large CSVs (up to 10,000 users and growing) and provides a progress bar so system admins can monitor the upload. Learn more here.

Attach a file to a comment

Context switching can be disruptive and inefficient when you're working on a project or task. Now, with Files in Comments, you can seamlessly start and maintain a group discussion in one place. Start a conversation by posting into a Workplace group or timeline, and then keep it there as people share responses, including files.

How does it work?

Simply click on "Attach a File" within the comments section of a Workplace post, and select the file you want to attach. You can include one attachment, up to 100 MB in size.
